Reykjavik, mostly

I was at an event where a large group of people were dancing some martial arts style dance.  I was somehow nominated to choose a team of dancers from the group so I had to pay attention to each person and it was a lot of pressure.  Then I was with a group of people from college, at a friend's wedding reception.  Everyone was split up into small rooms and "the cool crowd" was jam-packed into a room.  I decided to boycott the cool crowd because it was so overcrowded and competitive to get a drink and the bride & groom's attention.  I was a little bit pouty about it.

Then I was with a large group of friends and we found out we were going to Reykjavik, Iceland in a few hours.  It was a ridiculous idea but no one wanted to miss the opportunity.  So we got packed up to go.  As we flew over Iceland, I asked "Is this real?" because we were in small planes, the size of about 3 rollercoaster cars.  It was beautiful - clear skies, mountains, a lush green landscape below.  I kept thinking of Bjork and how it made so much sense that she was from here.  It was strange that there was no sign of volcanic ash in the sky and that we were cleared to fly.  I actually thought maybe we were on a 3-D ride at Disneyworld because these planes or helicopters were so small and rollercoaster-like.  They were so small that we were even able to zip through Reykjavik downtown and see shops, restaurants and cobblestone roads.  It looked like a great city.  At the hostel, our group bustled around finding our rooms and settling in.  Reem was there and wanted to watch a Cameron Diaz movie.  She kept asking others if it was a good movie, as she was really skeptical.  But she really wanted to watch it.  I remember thinking how lame it was that I was dreaming about a Cameron Diaz movie instead of dreaming of exploring Reykjavic on account of Reem.

Bathtub of Boys and Beans

My hub Mike (M1), our friends Mike (M2) and Andy & I were chilling one evening and M1 & I suggested that we all take a bath together.  It was super casual in my dream world, like asking if we should have a fire in the fire pit.  I think the idea was basically a poor-man's hot tub.  So the boys get down to swim trunks and I'm in a bra and undies and we're wedged in our tub together, all in a row (M1 in front, then me, then Andy, then M2 caboose-ing it).  How sad.  Andy said he'd like to make some beans for us to share as a snack.  He had this dehydrated bean mixture (like a packet of oatmeal) and planned to pour it into the tub, expecting that it would hydrate into a nice little floating pile of refried beans.  I didn't think it would work out this way and before I could warn him against the idea, I saw M2 behind him with dehydrated bean mess floating around everywhere.  It was gross and the end result was the four of us steeping in a tub of refried beans.  The end!

reception and flying

mike and i were at a wedding reception, i think, with our favorite band and their girlfriends and crew.  they were guests, too.  we were all dressed up, sipping cocktails in a giant, old ballroom, having a grand time.  good ol' friendsies.

the next day i was snooping around the venue and was in a large office-y storage area.  it was all white with lots of windows wrapped around it and some desks and boxes scattered here and there.  somehow, i realized that i could fly.  i sort of leaped off something and soared by curving my spine and arms.  i believe this was based on a real-life experience where i tried one of those sky-diving simulators and you bend and arch and such to speed your fall or slow it down.

the large room had those weird, white ceiling tiles and i accidentally soared up too quickly and bumped into the ceiling which caused the ceiling tiles of the whole room to shift off the grid.  i felt sheepish and quietly left before anyone could come and notice.

when describing this dream to mike today, two uncanny things occurred.  first, when i was trying to compare the ballroom to one he could reference, i couldn't think of the name of the damn eagles ballroom in oskhosh.  he blindly guessed "the eagles?" and i was all, "yeah!."  that was only a little uncanny.  but then!  he said that he had a dream about those white ceiling tiles, last night, too.  ooooooo.  something about installing them.  so we were laying right next to each other dreaming about ceiling tiles.  but i could fly and he couldn't.

and now, here's a video of my favorite band, state radio.

The Brother Totonchi

I dreamed that I was meeting Emil, Reem's brother (and Sarah's, though I've not yet met Sarah either), for the very first time.  For some reason I was in a hurry and really did not have time for this visit but thought I'd pop in briefly.  When I got there (Reem's place?), they were sitting around a tv.  I was introduced and then said that I had to get going pretty soon.  Emil begged me to stay, saying that we had to play some video game together.  I don't especially enjoy being put on the spot to play video games I've never played with people who play them all the time (in awake life) but I didn't want to be rude.  I stayed and played a game or two and Emil was soooo happy.  He was smiley and bouncy.

Jess Meets My Mom

I dreamed that my mom and I were driving around Madison in her car. We needed to stop by my friend Jess's house to drop off one box of Girl Scout cookies, even though I wasn't sure if they were hers or not. My mom pulled up and I jumped out of the car while she turned it around and parked it on the side of the street. I saw Jess in front of her house and handed her the box of cookies. She said she had something funny to show me. I was, of course, intrigued.

She held out a white tshirt and shook it so I could see what was on it. There was a giant Mickey Mouse and the phrase "If you fly this often, sometimes you have to reach for the ground." It was some kind of play on words in my dream, and it was referencing some other phrase about "reaching for the stars." We laughed and laughed and talked about how funny it was. She was giving it to me as a joke gift, and I was like "No! I don't want it! It's stupid!" and we laughed and laughed some more.

Then my mom came strolling up the walk. "Oh good," I thought. "She'll get to meet Jess and Mike." I looked at Jess to introduce her to my mom, but suddenly Jess gasped the word "DISNEY!" and was looking at my mom in horror. My mom was wearing the very tshirt we had been making fun of! "Um, this is my mom, Louise," I told Jess as I watched her hurriedly fold up the tshirt she was holding. They shook hands and everything was lovely and cordial.

I was happy that my mom and my friend were getting along so well and chatting like old buddies, so I'm not sure why I turned into a total asshole at this moment. I interrupted the conversation and asked Jess "So what's that tshirt you're holding?" She looked at me with a sort of "what the hell?" look and held it out to me. The whole time I was thinking "Why am I doing this?!" but I kept going. The shirt had transformed and the phrase was now written in French on the back of the shirt. My mom thought nothing of it and everybody was friends in the end. Whew. Sorry, Jess, that I was such a d-bag. This will not happen in real life. I promise.

Little Boy Gangsters

there was a mean gang of children and they were marching down the road. they looked like characters from "newsies." one little boy who was walking along the side had been burned badly in some incident by the other gang members, on purpose. i felt bad for this boy. he wasn't as "bad" as the others in the gang...just misguided. as he was walking, he looked back and saw the main gang member being pushed by another member in an oven that looked like it was converted to be a carriage. the boy was surprised to see this and approached them to ask what happened. the boy in the oven-carriage was super mean and his face was all pussy and crusty from being burned. he told the other boy that it was none of his business and hocked two gigantic loogies at the other boy's face. that's the end but i got a sense of knowing that the nicer boy would die of infection from being spit on because of his burns.

a little hazy

i was with someone i knew (perhaps the hub?) and we were traveling somewhere. i recall a large coliseum-type structure that we were in the neighborhood of. i think we meant to be at the coliseum but we had lost my sister who was with us. before we lost her, the three of us were looking for my mom. i remember thinking that we shouldn't have let my sister just go around the corner to look for our mom for a minute, because that's how we then lost my sister. so, we popped into random places as we were looking for my sister (screw looking for my mom at this point, i guess). one place we went into was a small, dark house. by then, i was carrying a tiny baby with me. it wasn't my baby - it seemed to be a friend's baby, i think. i put it down on a kitchen table, all swaddled and laying there. i opened up what was a bedroom door and saw a young woman against the wall across the room, crouched down with her arms folded around her knees. i felt intrusive so closed the door right away, then thought that perhaps she was in trouble as she looked sad or scared. so i opened up the door. this time, people appeared from other sides of the room and said, "maybe she can help us." they were debating having an orgy and that one girl was having second thoughts. it was very pragmatic, actually. she wasn't uncomfortable with the act itself - it was more like she just didn't know if she knew *how* to have an orgy. i'm not sure i was much help but the group came out of the room and i think one of them was perez hilton and he and i talked a bit. he was very chatty and a little flamboyant. i then went back to the baby and was able to catch it right before it was about to roll off the table.

holy crap

on a dark and chilly day, i was downtown madison, southeast of the capitol, where there was a giant bus station. like in a dark, dirty, dank parking garage. i was lost and did not know which bus to get on to get home. i decided to walk. as i was walking downtown, i passed an alley and took a step into it and when i saw a bunch of homeless people loitering there, i turned back and walked away. i encountered a pimp who was in some way giving me a hard time when my friend marc showed up. the pimp shot me many times but the bullets didn't go through me but left small skin abrasions. i felt a large force of pressure each time but no pain. i walked home with marc and at his door when we were saying goodbye, i told him i'd like to give him a kiss to say thank you for rescuing me. he then started fidgeting with his cat's litterbox which was on a shelf nearby, scooping the litter and adding potato flakes to it. i remember being uneasy that he was touching it with his bare hands. eventually, his attention turned back to me and we kissed. he was the worst kisser ever. it was closed-mouth and he tilted his head left and right. i didn't say anything but felt bad for him to find out that he was such a bad kisser, which i never knew before. i feel bad for saying this now but i was relieved that it was closed-mouth so i wouldn't have to taste his cigarette breath. haha!!

next sequence...
i was with an old friend that i used to work at a group home with. we were at the home to visit one of the residents. we were in his room using his phone to call him. he was downstairs but we still communicated over the phone. i asked him for his cell phone number and he kept giving me his room phone number which i was already on. it was confusing. i later found out that the home had live-in staff now because the two people who became live-ins, did all the work anyway.

next sequence...
i was in some sort of class to learn how to interview people and be on tv. it was me and two instructors/coaches. i sucked at everything. i had to interview this woman (a personal friend who i didn't seem to know in the dream) and was given cue cards that had strange formatting so i couldn't really follow them. there was also a newspaper article written about this woman that i had to go on but did not read it until during the interview. i did not even know her name so made one up in the moment and my coaches praised me for thinking on my feet in a way that the viewer wouldn't notice that i had made a mistake. i learned that she had collected some rare antique by accident that was worth a lot of money. during the interview, the woman was drunk and drifted away from me, leaving me standing with the microphone not knowing what to do.

next sequence...
there was a house in the middle of the ocean, on a platform of cement that extended about a foot out from the house. the waves were crashing up onto the platform where i was sitting with another woman and a beautiful little girl. both of their hair was blowing in the wind and the water was a beautiful blue. it was a relaxing moment and i wanted to live there. soon, a barge passed and then a large boat full of children approached and the children were all smiling and waving at us. a small sport boat approached. the driver was some younger male who i thought was trying to show off. he flipped the boat upside down near some large rocks peaking out of the water. then some people were at the house with us, like a group of about 15-20 that seemed to be tourists. i heard one woman say she was from wisconsin so i asked her about it and she said that she used to be married to someone from wisconsin. she seemed bothered by my asking. then i was inside the house which had sort of a mod theme. the ceilings were low and so was all the furniture. lots of solid colored accents. my hub was with me and he was texting with his new phone and showed me this new feature where he could text with his number pad. wow. it blew my mind.

el fin.

i did yoga before going to bed last night so i blame that.

i was filling in for a day as nanny for kimora lee simmons' kids. but she didn't just have those two little girls. she had a house full of kids - a bunch of older boys all over the place. the house was huge but it wasn't decorated very well. the boys rooms were outdated and messy. kimora's husband was a pro basketball player and that's why they lived in madison (?). i talked with the girls for awhile telling them that i've seen them on tv and they were so sweet. kimora wasn't all bitchy and fabulous like she is on tv. she was pretty much a soccer mom.

later, my hub and i were living in the house i grew up in (the brick one) and we had a landlord. she came by and was in the yard for awhile and i watched her the whole time through the windows. i wondered if she had seen me but she didn't seem to for a long time. then, she looked me straight in the eye and flicked me off.

then my dogs ran away, just down the street and i yelled at them and they came back.

facebook dream

i had a dream that i was hanging out with my ex-boyfriend from age 15 (i've been with my husband since age 16, so this is the most significant ex i have). we just happened to be at the same place at the same time and i wondered if we'd talk. in awake life, he's become aloof in recent years, even when i've contacted him superficially on facebook and invited him to my wedding (i guess that could have been awkward...eek). no, not aloof. unresponsive. so in my dream i was rather surprised that he was very warm and happy to catch up. i was very open to this friendly exchange which surprises me in my awake state. i think i'd be a little bitchy, actually. so that was that.

then i met up with an old friend from middle school who in awake life i "unfriended" on facebook. i know - - -i'm not really into this type of drama but it was before i knew that i could "hear less" from individuals on facebook and her constant status messages about getting wasted were really annoying me. and i kind of have a quiet little rule where i won't be friends with anyone who can't even say hello when requesting to be my friend (which was the case with her). or adds me when i ask, and doesn't respond to my hello. right?! so back to the dream. it was awkward, basically.

so that's the theme of the day, i suppose.

dare i?

i watched some model contest show last night where a couple guys & gals had to dress up (or down) as pixies. i then had a dream that i was walking across a bridge in the woods and came upon a crowd of about 8 male pixies. they weren't sparkly or flamboyant or whatever. they were more mossy and masculine. i ended up doin' the deed with one of them, thinking that it would be okay with my hub because he'd be happy that i was feeling so good. mmm, mmM! this was a dream where i woke up wondering if i really had an orgasm. got a little skip in my step today!

feijoada

my hub and i were in a restaurant, ordering, when the waitress said that they had feijoada. in my dream, i knew i was dreaming, so i realized that by the waitress knowing how to pronounce feijoada, i too, then, knew how to pronounce it. i don't recall how it was pronounced in the dream, nor do i know how to pronounce it in my awake state.

rodent creature

i opened a dresser drawer and inside were what looked like milkweed pods facing down. four in a row, from largest in the front to smallest in the back. i used some inanimate poking object to overturn the first one. when i did, a rodent-like creature sprung out of it and skittered around the whole house. at some point i was able to get a good look at it while it was standing still. it had a furry face and large-ish ears, a skeletal body (seriously, just bones) and a long tail. oh, and the best part? it had a freakishly long, skinny trunk. yes, like an elephant. but realllllly skinny and reallllly long. it curved upward. i feel like there was mutual hatred between myself and this thing but i didn't want to kill it. i was just disgusted by it and thought it was going to hurt me. i woke up and tried to draw the creature and it didn't so much turn out.

michael franti

i was at a summer camp for adults. it was some sort of flight/aerospace camp. everything i did was in slow motion and people were always waiting for me or i just missed the activities completely. things like putting my socks on or finding the right gym shorts in my luggage. as soon as i got ready, the activity would be ending. for some reason, the camp leaders accepted this - they didn't rush me. they just accepted it as if it was my disability and i couldn't help it.

michael franti was there and i kept trying to nonchalantly take pictures of the scenery or other campers, getting him in the shot, so i could tell everyone that i saw him. eventually, though, he and i struck up a conversation where he confided that he does not know how to express himself. i told him that he does a pretty good job of hiding that in his music.

animal deep fryer

i was with friends and we were going to some community event where they were giving away bikes. when we got there, this was not the case. no one there seemed to know anything about these free bikes. instead, there were people and animals in a long line waiting to approach a large deep fryer. the event was actually one where each person could bring one animal to put in the deep fryer. one person had a cow and i started describing what it would probably feel like for these animals to be put in the deep fryer alive, hoping that people would empathize with the animals and change their minds. then i saw someone i knew and she had a shoebox. i opened the shoebox and inside was her cat. it was one of those really skinny, exotic looking ones with big ears, sort of like this but darker. enraged, i said, "so you're just trying to get rid of your cat?!"

as i said that, i noticed that there was a post-it note on the cat that said, "i'm just trying to get rid of my cat."

i was apalled! i walked away.

i am a vegetarian.

transportation

mike and i were gathering at some warehouse-type building on the outskirts of minneapolis to get on a bus/train modern-looking white vehicle that would be taking us somewhere else. a mob of people were at this checkpoint, gathering to get onto these vehicles. i don't remember where we were going or why. when we finally found parking for our car and walked a long way to get to the building, it appeared that the last of the vehicles had loaded passengers and was driving away. we were disappointed but then spotted one last one. it was only about 1/3 full and the passengers were cheerleaders or something. they were very nice and we thought we were very lucky, not only to get a vehicle, but to be on one that was not crammed full of people. we had to bring a form of simple transportation with us (bicycle, roller skates, skateboard, etc.) so mike brought a skateboard and i brought gumballs. i believe my intention was to skate across the gumballs like cartoon characters do with marbles. it seemed practical.

good ol' "pat"

does anyone else notice that the longer the day progresses after a dream you recall, the more details are lost and the more difficult it becomes to remember? ugh.

well, i had a sentimental dream last night. in real life, i used to work at a group home in minnesota. there were 6 residents - all so very uniquely amazing and fun. the best job of my life. the best lots of things of my life. anyway, so i dreamed about them last night. one of the guys named pat (not his real name - gotta get all confidential on yo asses) and i were sitting in his kitchen chatting. we always liked to play word games that made no sense. i don't know what we were particularly discussing but in real life, i'd throw out an object and he'd make a corresponding sound. like, "what does a tree say?" and then see what his creative mind could come up with. often, he broke the non-existent rules and acted things out instead of making a sound. so i believe for "tree" he'd stand up and wave his arms out around his head. pat's a smart guy - we just enjoyed the silliness of such a game.

so now i'm no longer blogging about my dream but moreso reminiscing on the good times of yore. whatever the hell yore is. "what does a yore say?" try it.

barack your moves

i decided to start throwing dance parties around town, much like indie-queer. not like indie-queer in the sense of being linked to the glbtqwxyz crowd...but in the way that they host their dance parties around town at different venues and throw a few each month or so, rather than owning a venue and booking/creating theirr own parties/bands/etc. so basically i was some social diva in town thinking i could upstart something rad. there had to be a theme, of course. so the theme was barack obama dance parties, playing only barack obama songs. whatever that is. i only thought of two: the "yes we can" song and "it's a new day" both by will.i.am. i guess there's obama-girl but she didn't enter my dream. my first dance party would be at monona terrace.

later i remember a totally different scene where a coworker of mine said she was moving back to india but didn't want anyone to know because they would think she was stupid for it. i was sad because i would miss her. i'm selfish like that.

rental property intrusion

my hub and i saw this huge, beautiful, old, brick, warehousey, industrial, yet refurbished apartment building. it was for sale but we did not have an appointment with our realtor for an official showing. i wanted to see it so badly at that very moment so i began climbing some wooden structure attached to the outside. i found a way into the building and saw that there were about 7 apartments and the hallway was vaulted, so i could see down a few stories to a lobby where some hipster guy was at a desk. i worried that he'd see me in the building. i came upon a tenant who invited me into her place. she also gave me keys to another apartment so i could sneak in. i left her place and suddenly felt really paranoid about breaking in, realizing i could be charged with attempted something-rather. i thought, not only could i ruin my reputation in the income property world, but also i could lose my day job if i was charged with a crime. i had to be really stealthy about my next move, as i was in the building, unauthorized, and could still get caught. i hemmed and hawed about going back to give the girl the keys she gave me, as giving them to her would be evidence that i had someone else's keys (?). i reluctantly decided to go back to her apartment and hope for the best. i gave her the keys and a pair of baby shoes from her apartment but then took the baby shoes back and told her that, no, those actually weren't hers. for some reason i thought that the baby shoes would be solid proof of my crimes. i knew it was flakey to give them to her, acknowledging that they were hers, and then take them and backpedal on my story, but she didn't question it.

when i somewhat-awoke, i felt relief to realize that this was only a dream and that i was not truly in any criminal trouble.

traffic stop

hey there - - i'm the new girl. this should be fun....

i think i dreamed a lot of things last night but i only recall one chapter. i was stuck in traffic, a la beltline, or basically the highway from hell for those not familiar with the madison area. i hadn't moved for hours but could not see what the hold-up was. finally, a cop strolls up a few cars ahead of me and i see that he's taking out a tape measure to see how far apart cars are, apparently to ticket anyone who did not leave enough space between them and the car in front of them. it was some sort of ticketing operation - no real traffic jam at all. the car in front of me passed the test but the space i left in front of me was a bit smaller so i worried. in the end, i passed.
